Who is most likely to present with a fibroadenoma of the breast?

Fibroadenomas are benign tumors of the breast that are most commonly found in young women, particularly those between the ages of 15 and 35. The characteristics of the population that typically presents with fibroadenomas are closely related to demographic factors, including race. Young black women specifically demonstrate a higher incidence of fibroadenomas compared to women of other races. This increased prevalence can be attributed to genetic and hormonal factors that influence breast tissue development and growth during adolescence and early adulthood.

While middle-aged women, postmenopausal women, and women over 60 may experience breast changes or other types of breast lesions, fibroadenomas are less likely to be the diagnosis in these age groups. The physiological developments in breast tissue during and after menopause usually lead to different types of changes, which are not typically associated with fibroadenomas. Therefore, the demographic and age aspects highlight young black women as the group most likely to present with fibroadenomas.
